was the Hitchhiker from the 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre based on Charles Manson?

I know Leatherface was based on Ed Gein, but the hitcher kinda looks 
acts like Manson

the whole Manson family thing had just happened, wonder if that was in
the back of Tobe Hooper's mind while writing it
