BBC, RAI launch 'Dancing' suit in Italy

ROME -- BBC Worldwide and Italo pubcaster RAI are suing Mediaset, Endemol and Mexican multimedia conglomerate Televisa for copyright infringement in Italy, claiming that upcoming Mediaset show "Baila!" is an illegal copycat of the BBC's "Dancing with the Stars" format. Baila!," which is adapted from Televisa's popular Latin American format "Bailando por un Sueno" (Dancing for a Dream), is due to debut on Mediaset's flagship Canale 5 station on Sept. 27. Known as "Ballando sotto le Stelle," RAI's adaptation of "Dancing with the Stars" has been reaping stellar ratings in Italy since 2005. Mediaset in a statement has said Endemol, from which it purchased the "Baila!" format, has guaranteed it to be original. The top Italian commercial broadcaster, in rejecting accusations of plagiarism, also quoted Mediaset VP Pier Silvio Berlusconi as saying that a key difference between the two shows is that "Baila!" has "the peculiarity of involving both celebrities and normal people," unlike "Dancing with the Stars." The same Endemol format is the basis for "Mira Quien Baila," the dance talent show that is a hit with Hispanic audiences on Univision in the U.S. But the BBC and RAI claim that the "Baila!" version Mediaset is preparing to air would certainly violate Italian copyright law. BBC Worldwide takes the protection of its copyright extremely seriously and is currently undertaking legal action in Italy to protect its 'Dancing with the Stars' format," the BBC said in a statement. 'Dancing with the Stars' has been named as world's most successful reality TV format, and has been licensed to more than 35 international broadcasters. It is very important to BBC Worldwide and its international licensees that the format is protected from infringement." A decision by a Rome court is expected in coming days. Emmy not scared to create bold options

Hitchcock never won an Oscar. (No, honorary honours don't count.) The Grammys i never thought an adequate amount of the Beatles to provide this guitar rock band record of the season. With that yardstick, Emmy voters holds their heads reasonably high for that way they have recognized groundbreaking television through the years.InchAll in the household,Inch "Cheers" and "30 Rock" won to find the best comedy series within their newbie of qualifications, while over about the drama side, "Mad Males," "Lost" and "Hill Street Blues" won series Emmys for his or her newcomer season. "Saturday Evening Live" required top variety honors on its try.Actually, nearly all television's most acclaimed shows required home lots of Emmy gold within their heyday, some, of course, earlier than others."Groundbreaking shows are, by their character, such departures that frequently they're overlooked initially," states three-time Emmy-winning producer Paul Junger Witt ("The Golden Women," "Brian's Song"). "However the Television Academy happens to be proficient at playing catch-up. They inevitably recognize quality."In some instances, that recognition may be a little moderate in comparison to the quantity of critical acclaim bathed upon a set. "Seinfeld" won the Emmy for comedy series in 1993, but lost up to the more typically minded sitcom "Frasier" next 5 years. Ray David's publish-"Seinfeld" Cinemax series, "Curb Your Enthusiasm," has yet to win the very best comedy award, losing to network shows for example "Everyone Loves Raymond," "WorkInch and "30 Rock.""The Sopranos," probably the most influential dramas in modern television history for the actual way it brought inside a wave of complex, dark-designed shows, won top honors just two times in the six seasons, losing to "Free Airline Wing" in the other four tries."Many people just could not circumvent the violence for the reason that show," states film writer Richard Walter, a professor at UCLA's School of Theater, Film and tv. "The brutality was an excessive amount of. If you cannot watch a show, you cannot provide any recognition."Knowing in the rankings, couple of people viewed another Cinemax drama, "The Wire." Because David Simon's significantly acclaimed series broadcast on a single network as "The Sopranos" throughout roughly the same time frame period, advocates enjoy discussing the merits of every. Yet "The Wire" obtained just two Emmy nominations -- both for writing -- throughout its five-year run."That's just criminal," states Josef Adalian, West Coast editor for NY magazine's Vulture.com along with a former Variety staffer. "It had been a dense, dark reveal that most likely did not engage in too should you just watch a chapter alone using a screener. You want to think all Emmy voters were passionate TV fans who viewed everything good, but individuals have lives."In the past, additionally, there are been a particular prejudice from the fantasy genre. Emmy voters overlooked critical and fan faves for example "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Battlestar Galactica," though the 2010 nomination of HBO's medieval fantasy series "Bet on Thrones" for the best drama may suggest a change for the reason that type of thinking."As television is becoming more daring, voters have, too," Witt states. "I believe any self-enforced restrictions have passed by the wayside. This is an exciting time for creativeness."Related Links: The 25 implies that transformed television Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

Music catalogs to digital realm

Not every new digital music venture has roots in Sweden, but it often feels that way. Less than two months after music streaming service Spotify captured widespread attention with its U.S. launch, fellow Scandi startup X5 Music Group is also making inroads Stateside, laying claim to that most American of musical institutions, Sun Records. X5, founded in Stockholm in 2003, is a record label that operates under a unique strategy. The label signs no new artists of its own and has never released a physical album. Instead, the group acquires deep catalogs (mostly classical thus far) and sells them through iTunes and Amazon, repackaged into budget-priced thematic compilations with new artwork. The strategy is not exactly new. In fact, a close analogue would be the Time-Life CD compilations historically sold during commercial breaks on the deeper recesses of basic cable. But the canniness with which the label has updated that strategy for the digital marketplace -- with releases heavily search-engine optimized for online retailers, and inhouse-created cover art designed to look best at postage-stamp size -- sets it apart. Its efforts have paid off: The tiny company has quietly become the No. 2 classical label in the U.S. (trailing only the music industry's overall leader, Universal Music Group), having sold more than 150 million songs since 2007, with 13 albums hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Classical chart last year. The label's American launch came after securing a $9 million January investment from Northzone Ventures, also a lead investor in Spotify. But this week's deal to license the entire 6,000-track catalog of Sun Records, the legendary Memphis home (now headquartered in Nashville) of Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins, is the one that has them poised to make a new splash. (The deal does not include tracks by Sun's most famous son, Elvis Presley. Those recordings were scooped up by RCA decades ago.) Speaking from the label's new American offices in the Empire State Building, X5's North American CEO Scott Ambrose Reilly, who previously helped spearhead the development of Amazon's MP3 business, acknowledged that the markets are quite different. "For one, there's no publishing to be paid (in classical)," said Reilly. "And two, classical catalogs are very easy to license, so fairly quickly after you have success you start to see copycat albums come around with more tracks, lower prices. It's harder to hold the territory. "With Sun we won't have that problem. (A competitor) couldn't just go to a different orchestra... So it's competitively a better investment. We can't go to the same track volume we do on classical releases, but because of the limited ability to license, we won't need to." X5-distributed Sun releases will start to roll out next month, but the Sun acquisition is just the start. The company is at work acquiring other catalogs, and Reilly mentioned that some Sun material will be packaged alongside other labels' material from the early rock era. Most promisingly, he noted that a vast number of Sun recordings have yet to be released digitally, meaning the company's strategy could penetrate beyond casual "greatest hits" buyers. "(Sun) has really focused on top-sellers, and we're of the belief that for a catalog as great as Sun's, there's long-tail potential that they may have overlooked," Reilly noted. Sun Records prexy John Singleton puts it more simply: "I would compare it to, say, you take an older woman, put on new makeup, a new hairstyle, a new dress on her and she looks completely different," he said. "They're planning on doing something like that." Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Glam Slam: Test Drive Tuesday Hip Barbershop Haircut

By Ryan PattersonLOS ANGELES, Calif. -- I was beyond overdue for a haircutI hadnt had it cut since around Memorial Day and couldnt get in with the woman who regularly cuts my hair. I was so desperate, I decided to check out the place my husband goes for his cuts Floyds 99 Barbershop, one of a few retro themed barbershops here in LA. Floyds, which is a hip chain of shops in Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts and Texas, is not your granddads barbershop. The music is very loud. There are rock n roll posters covering the walls and ceilings theres a pool table, and the combined piercings and tattoos of the stylists could give the folks at a Harley convention a run for their money. BUT the haircuts for men are only $21.00. Its $29.00 for women. You dont need an appointment. I decided to give it a try. I went in to the local Burbank branch, where I signed in. Weekends can be busy with a long wait, but since it was the middle of the week, I waited less than two minutes before I was seated with a stylist. The vibe of the place skews very masculine and I asked the stylist if they have many female customers. She said as more and more people are learning that they do both men and women, shes seen an increase in the ladies coming in. The affordable price is just for the cut. It does not include a wash, blow dry, etc. I was just looking for a simple trim and the stylist was friendly, quick, and did a good job. The whole thing took less than 15 minutes. Floyds also offers color services, face and head shaves, bang trims, buzz cuts and kids hair cuts. If you have difficult hair or a complicated style you might have to work a little to find a stylist there thats right for you. If you want a luxurious, pampering experience, this is probably not the place for you. I would recommend it for guys and kids for sure. For the ladies, if you have a simple cut or trim, its worth it. You cant beat the price. Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
